This event held special meaning, as our founder’s brother was the Chief of Police at this department before an unfortunate incident cost him his job, and almost cost him his freedom. It’s one of the reasons the Reiki Brigade is so passionate about providing stress relief for first responders, and helping them realize maintaining mental health means processing difficult emotions, not disregarding them.

We have done dozens (hundreds?) of events like this and we have never had as much support from our host department as we did at this event. Joe Holtz is the Commander of the Grayslake PD. We call people in these top-tier positions “white shirts.” It’s unusual for a white shirt to be involved in the planning and orchestration of a wellness event at all. In contrast, Commander Holtz personally distributed the promotional materials before the event, came in on his day off to give us a warm welcome, talked up our services throughout the event, stood buy in case we needed anything, made suggestions about the best location for a group photo, and helped us pack up at the end.
We were also very impressed with how many of the Grayslake team were involved in other forms of self care. We heard over and over that people were practicing yoga or meditation, seeing an acupuncturist, or seeking support from a counselor. This was music to our ears, and evidence that so much progress has been made in the 12 years since our founder’s brother was a white shirt in this department. Support from the top is surely a factor in this change.
