Reiki for Veterans

We’ve been offering Reiki at the Jesse Brown VA Stand Down since 2011, and it never gets old.

Roughly 200 men and women came through the armory Friday to take advantage of what was offered and commune with their friends and fellow service members. The veterans are supported with services, clothing, groceries, care items, and camaraderie that gives the event a lovely high school reunion vibe.

And there are so many helpers on hand to handle logistics and make sure everyone gets what they need. Medical staff provided blood sugar and blood pressure checks. Sox Volunteers and the Greater Chicago Food Despository had contingents staffing the line.

This woman, a first-time volunteer, was SO excited to help a few women veterans by giving them braids. Her first customer was just as happy to find this new addition to the service lineup. These young men offered shave/haircut services to a long line of men who seemed to appreciate the pampering as much as the fresh looks.

This was Kim’s first time at a Stand Down and she loved it, “This is my favorite event so far!” It felt purposeful to be able to support veterans physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing with Reiki, as well as helping them pack their ruck sacks full of giveaways and lend an ear for those wanting to talk.

Two of the vets we spoke to are interested in taking a Reiki class, and thanks to two generous donors, we are able to offer them those classes. If you are interested in supporting veterans becoming self sufficient with Reiki, you can click the link below.
